Now if I could just have mechanical keys and a cover with a stiff hinge and a cover that swung out of the way, I’d completely sated. Apple has hit it out of the park with this generation. Ultimately, I’m quite thrilled with my new portable productivity setup. ![]() It’s not a huge deal, but if you’re clutter-adverse, giving up a compact all-in-one system for something that’s frequently broken into parts stings a bit. : Apple Smart Keyboard: iPad Keyboard and case for iPad Pro 10. If you’re like me and using your iPad for things like reading comics, you’ll find yourself frequently leaving the keyboard behind as you pop off the tablet to read unencumbered. The cantilever that lets you get the perfect viewing angle for your iPad doesn’t fold back flat like the Smart Keyboard Folio does. My biggest complaint with this latest configuration, however, is a result of the Magic Keyboard’s greatest strength. I love this combination and find it easier when I want to write something more significant I can just sit and use it like a laptop. ![]() The integrated trackpad, while of dubious use even in the latest version of iPadOS, solves one of the biggest problems I’ve had with tablet typing cases all of that wasted real estate just begs for you to thumb the cursor into place as if you were on an actual laptop. The scissor switches are a giant leap over the membrane chiclets of the Smart Keyboard Folio, but I still long for portable mechanical keys like Razer’s. This means users will need to connect a Bluetooth mouse or rely on the iPad's touch screen for navigation. Here we are, four years after my initial experiment began and while I’m not ready to say that the latest iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard are the definitive solution, they’re pretty damn close. The main difference between the two keyboards is that the Magic Keyboard features a trackpad, while the Smart Keyboard Folio does not. That earns the “magic” moniker in my book. ![]() I don’t know how Apple managed to fit such a solid keyboard into a space that’s not much thicker than the 1mm travel allowed for the keys in the first place, but they did.
